The Gander Inn and the Quack Shack; The Gander Inn and the Quack Shack were located at 1800 Market Street Rd. The Jaycees opened the Quack Shack youth club in 1949 to fight juvenile delinquency. They renovated abandoned Army barracks and leased the land from a local beer distributor for $1 a year. There was a dance floor, band stand, booths, chairs and tables, and a snack bar upstairs, and a game room downstairs. The rules: no smoking, no drinking of alcohol, no gambling, no blue jeans and no “bopping.” The latter two rules were relaxed as rock and roll gained acceptance. Hurricane Carla heavily damaged the structure in 1961 and it was never rebuilt.
